Whether it is the “Drawer Effect” preventing the return of household electronics or the “Value Leakage” of high-grade Titanium scrap being down-cycled into steel, the barriers to circularity are frequently behavioural, economic, or regulatory.
To help innovation teams and policymakers navigate these complexities, we are excited to release the 100 Critical Circular Materials Ideation Cards. These cards were specifically developed and battle-tested during an Innovate UK Business Connect Ignite Lab series on Critical Circular Materials.
From Systems Mapping to Radical Ideation
The Ignite Lab brought together a diverse cohort of UK industrial leads to move beyond high-level strategy and into evidence-based intervention. Participants used systems mapping and “linear leakage audits” to identify exactly where value falls out of the UK economy.
However, once a leverage point is found, the next question is: “What do we do about it?”
The Critical Circular Materials Ideation Cards provide the spark. They are designed to address the “Wicked Problems” of the materials transition by forcing a shift in perspective across four key lenses:
